TMC pushes for renaming West Bengal to 'Bangla' during Zero Hour in Parliament
Amul has reduced the prices of its popular milk variants—Amul Gold, Amul Taaza, and Amul Tea Special—by ₹1 per litre, effective from January 24, 2025. Following the price cut, Amul Gold will be priced at ₹65 per litre, Amul Taaza at ₹53 per litre, and Amul Tea Special at ₹61 per litre. The reduction applies only to the 1-litre packs of these specific variants, while the prices of other milk products and packaging formats remain unchanged.
The price reduction comes after several member unions of the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which oversees the Amul brand, reduced the milk procurement prices paid to dairy farmers. This adjustment in the procurement price has created a favorable condition for a price reduction in retail milk prices. GCMMF is the largest dairy cooperative in India and handles the marketing and distribution of Amul products.
The decision marks the first reduction in prices since June 2024, when Amul increased milk prices by ₹2 per litre across all variants. The price increase in June 2024 was implemented across Amul's entire milk range, including Amul Gold, Amul Taaza, and Amul Tea Special. The current price reduction reflects changes in the dynamics of the milk supply chain, including adjustments in the procurement costs paid to dairy farmers.
GCMMF operates a vast network of village cooperatives, district milk unions, and state milk federations to manage milk production and distribution. Over 18,600 village cooperatives in Gujarat collect milk from farmers daily, with payments made based on the quality and fat content of the milk. The milk is then processed at district unions before being marketed by the state federation. This decentralized structure ensures efficient collection, processing, and distribution while supporting millions of dairy farmers.
Amul’s cooperative model is built on the principle of empowering farmers, with over 3.6 million dairy farmers involved in the cooperative system. GCMMF provides various services to these farmers, including training programs, subsidized machinery, and healthcare facilities for cattle. The federation also utilizes advanced technology for milk collection and processing, including automated systems that measure milk quality and fat content. These initiatives help improve milk production efficiency and ensure the consistent quality of Amul’s dairy products.
